I sostantivi come family sono chiamati collettivi perché indicano un gruppo di persone. In inglese tali sostantivi, anche se singolari, possono essere seguiti dal verbo al plurale proprio perché si tengono in considerazione i membri del gruppo. In generale, se si pensa alla famiglia come ad un unico gruppo si sceglie il singolare, mentre se si considerano i componenti della famiglia si usa il plurale: My family is very big, la mia famiglia è molto numerosa; His family are coming over for dinner, i suoi familiari verranno per cena.
